The date works like airline seats: a Saturday move typically costs 15–20% more than the same job on a Tuesday, and July and August book out first because families move in the school holidays. Do removal companies charge per hour or a fixed price?

Man-and-van services usually charge by the hour — around £40–£70 for a van and one or two crew — while full removal companies quote a fixed price after a survey, based on volume and distance. For anything bigger than a 1-bed, a fixed quote protects you: an hourly job that overruns is your problem, a fixed one is theirs.
Is a deposit normal when booking a removal?
Yes — most firms take a deposit of roughly 10–20% (or a flat £50–£150) to hold the date, with the balance due just before or on moving day. The part to check is the refund policy, in writing: if your completion date slips, you want the deposit to move with it, not disappear.
When are removals cheapest?
Midweek, mid-month, outside school holidays. Fridays and month-ends are the priciest dates because property chains complete then, and summer books out earliest — a Tuesday in mid-November is about as cheap as a UK move gets. If your dates are flexible, say so when you ask for quotes.
